just meHi my name is Debbie Hutchinson, I would like to welcome you to my blog. However, before you get too excited I have to clarify a very important fact; I am not a doctor…. The “DR” represents my initials. However I am currently obtaining a Masters in Clinical/Human Nutrition and once this degree is completed; God willing, I will be perusing a doctorate as well. Now that we have that out of the way let me tell you a little about myself and why I decided to create a blog. Through our own life experiences we have come to realize that alternative treatment options for those struggling with addictions and mental/emotional health issues are very much a viable option. Nutrition, diet and lifestyle choices go hand in hand with obtaining an optimal outcome from these struggles.

I feel establishing myself as an expert in this field of study is extremely important and because of this you will see quotes from viable scientific and/or reliable sources on the topic of health, mainly surrounding addiction and mental health. So let’s get started…. I did not always understand the importance of nutrition and its significant impact on our physical and mental/emotional health until I was put in a situation where I had no other choice except to consider it, at a level that I would never imagined to exist. Now its not that I did not understand that we needed good nutrition to survive, I just didn’t think about how it all worked together.

Believe it or not, I actually started a nutrition program over 20 years ago, but my husband was in the military and was transferred to another duty station. Waaaaay back then there were no computers or online classes etc…. So unfortunately for me I had to look at another option and that’s when I fell into the mortgage industry. I stayed in that industry for seventeen years, which nine of those years I was the CEO of my own mortgage company. Anyway, like I said, I was put in a situation where I had no other choice but to go back to something that I was very interested in 20+ years before, nutrition! Who knew my interest so long ago would be the saving grace for my youngest son and the beginning of a brand new career in my mid forty’s. Who knew? God knew! The event that changed my course goes back to 2006 and it wasn’t until 2009 that I decided to close my doors for good. 2009 is also the year I decided to go back to school. I never finished my degree some 20 years ago and honestly I really didn’t know where to begin. We were living in Virginia Beach at the time and I rode on the campus of Regent University and as I drove down the street to the admissions office; there right in front of me, was this beautiful cross. I really felt that this was the school to begin my journey in educating my self in the area of mental health/addictions. I decided to build this foundation with a B.S. degree in Psychology with and emphasis in substance abuse. I knew of the value of nutrition so pretty much every post/paper/project/powerpoint I researched I centered in around this concept. About two years into this I knew I wanted to further my education in nutrition and I tried really hard to convince my husband to move to Arizona so I could obtain a Naturopath Physician degree. When I realized that wasn’t going to happen I began my purist in finding at least a Masters online at a regionally accredited university. I happened to run across the University of Bridgeport. I was soooooo excited!!! A masters in clinical nutrition and one centered in functional medicine. I thought I have died and gone to heaven, my prayers had been answered.

You will find while reading my post I am not into labels; so we will just leave it to he suffered a mental and drug related health issue at the age of seventeen. Through the course of helping him find complete healing and restoration I discovered the powerful impact nutrition and lifestyle had in bringing it all back into balance. The importance of taking a biomedical approach is one that simply should not be ignored, but sadly it is always ignored. This approach takes the whole person into account. There are underlying root causes which are continuously overlooked in modern medicine and a functional medicine approach allows us to undercover these possible causes. This blog is to share many of the things I learned about nutrition, supplements and lifestyle choices and how these things have a great impact on our spiritual being which possesses a soul and lives in a body. It is my HOPE to give you insight to another way of healing.

I am so excited to introduce my friend, new co-founder with A.V.O.I.D., and contributor to this blog, Karen Hall. Karen and I met while living in Virginia Beach through a mutual friend from the church we were all attending. Our first introduction meeting was an arrangement for several of us to get together to see how we could possibly do something in our community to help others. Our friend knew about A.V.O.I.D., however A.V.O.I.D., was not the reason we were meeting, but it was one that was on the table to discuss. Once Karen and her husband Ken began to share their journey through mental health and addiction issues (with family members) it really touched my heart. As I sat there and listened I wondered, God is this a divine appointment? After we all shared at the end of the meeting our friend, along with me, Bill, Karen and Ken all decided that A.V.O.I.D. may very well be what they were all looking for too. We had all experienced a combination of these two issues in some way or another and we all recognized the value each of us could bring. We met at our home several times and began to form the organization. However, we realized due to circumstances out of our control and the possibility that God was just not ready for us to move forward at that time we decided to put everything on hold.

Karen and I kept in touch over the past few years and just over the last few months reconnected on facebook. I noticed Karen talking about having her manuscript published and I shared with her a local friend, Shay Rockhold, who I knew could help her. This began our conversation about A.V.O.I.D. again, and she shared with me that it never left her heart and she was still very interested in becoming a part of our mission. She was ecstatic that I never gave up on A.V.O.I.D.; even though there were many times I questioned the calling to offer such a program. However looking back now, even though I knew back then God was equipping us; it all makes perfect sense at this time why the timing is right now and not then, everything has fallen right into place.

Karen has decided to become a part of A.V.O.I.D. and Bill and I welcome her with open arms. We know Karen is going to bring so much insight and there is no doubt that she is going to be a huge part of what we are doing. So please join me in welcoming our new co-founder, Karen Hall.

P.S. Karen’s first book will be coming out in a few days so keep your eyes open, you’re not going to want to miss it.
